Lizards are commonly found carnivorous animals around every part of the world. Some people think that they found only in desert areas but they are found everywhere. These are small members of the ancient dragon family which has found its survival among the extinct species of its kind. There are around 3800 species of lizards worldwide and many of them are found in sandy desert area. Some people keep lizards as their pets and feed them with their proper diet. Small insects are main lizard food which they found very easily. There many lizards that live by eating only flies and spiders, these are commonly found in localities.  

Generally lizards eat small insects, snails and types or worms where some lizards are vegetarian and live by eating plants. Among insects crickets are most favorite lizard food which quite evident in television programs. Geko lizards are most common type of lizard specie which is kept as pet as it is easy to won and comparatively easy on feeding habits. The feeding habit of lizards entirely upon their type and specie, but common house lizards has simple feeding habits like eating spiders and nocturnal insects. People should avoid dangerous and challenging species which are hard to keep them as pets.

The spiny lizards are omnivorous specie of its kinds which eat both plants and animals while some of them feed on algae. The general and most common type of lizard food can be categorized into insects, fishes, rodents and worms. While feeding a lizard with rodents ensure a frozen prey because live prey can be fatal for a lizard. The lizards with habit of eating fish generally eat fresh water fishes as salt water fishes contain high amount of salt in them. The heavy amount of salt when taken by lizards destroys their respiratory organs and they die of it.

Many of the sand lizards are fed by eating types of worms occurring under the soil or in plants like mealworms, silkworms and butterworms. The house lizards also eat larvae of silk worm occurring in the garden. The lizards bite and chew their food from the teeth in their upper and lower jaw. Always be careful about environment of pet reptiles as when they left in wild or open area, they fail to adapt to the surroundings. While keeping lizards as pets about their water consumption, lizards drink clean and fresh water while some drink dew drops accumulated on leaves. Lizards should always be kept in large and airy terrarium.
