Lizards As Pets

More and more people are getting fascinated with reptiles and have chosen lizards to become their pets. Lizards are available in a broad range of species that may have different care requirements. Selecting what type of lizard to get as pet may require research and would depend on the capability of the potential pet owner. As much as possible, acquire a lizard from a breeder or a pet shop as opposed to one taken from the wild. Lizards taken from the wild are likely to be stressed, prone to sickness and parasites, and are hard to domesticate.

Lizards are good pets if you do not have much time to tend and care for them. They require minimal upkeep and not that much space. However, lizards would still require some supervision, proper care, and commitment. Unlike dogs and cats, these cold-blooded reptiles tend to be dull and do not have the tendency to interact with its owners. Due to this, lizards are often kept as decorative pets similar to aquarium fishes. Owners still need to know the diet and the habitat required for their pet lizard. Extra care should also be taken as reptiles may carry bacteria as well such as Salmonella.

Lizards As Pets

Although pet lizards may not be costly, the equipment required to care for these may well cost several times greater than the pet itself. A prospective owner should also be aware of how big the lizard may get as an adult. Learn the correct lighting and heating needs of your desired pet lizard. Owners may also need to raise or catch insects to feed their pet lizard. It also unadvised to keep different species of lizards in one terrarium even if they share similar care needs. As you can see, keeping lizards as pets still require some effort from the owners although it may a bit lesser.

Beginners should start on Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons, Blue Tongued Skinks, and Green Anoles. Geckos are small and do not require UV lighting. Bearded Dragons and Blue Tongued Skinks are tame and easy to handle but would need a larger tank and special lighting. Green Anoles are small reptiles requiring only a small tank and UV lighting. Starters should consider keeping these lizards as pets first. Experienced pet owners on the other hand may consider more challenging pet lizards such as Iguanas, Chameleons, Chinese Water Dragons, Long Tailed Lizards, Argentinean Black and White Tegu, or Savannah Monitors once they become more adept in handling and caring for these reptiles.
