Western Fence Lizard

The Western Fence Lizard, also known as Blue-Belly, is a most found lizard in the region of California and the nearby areas. They have the scientific name of Sceloporus occidentals. Being a member of genus Scelporus, it is a spiny lizard. They have snout-vent length, size ranging from 5.7-8.9 cm, with a total length resulting to 21 cm. they are either black or brown in color. The brown color may be greenish or sandy. The most different characteristic of these lizards is a bright blue belly, along with yellow ventral side of limbs. They carry on their throat, a blue patch. Females and juveniles either carry faint coloration or in some it is absent too. The scales present on them are keeled and around 35 to 75 in number.

This lizard is found in large number in California. The other regions where it is present are southwest and eastern Oregon, southwest Daho, northwestern Baja California, western Uttah, Nevada, even in Columbia River George, and few of the islands off the coast of both Baja California and California. The western fence lizard relishes a wide variety of habitat. They can be seen in broken chaparral, grassland, woodland, sagebrush, farmland, coniferous forest, and cover heights from sea level up to 10,800 ft. they don't occupy harsh desert. Presently, these lizards are under unprotected category and no application of conservation restrictions on them. They are often viewed on fence posts, rocks, paths, and other elevated places. This characteristic of theirs makes easy for birds, snakes, and some mammals like shrews to target them. Like any other lizards, they safeguard themselves by employing fast reflexes.

In their diet, they like to have insects and spiders. They even undergo a period of hibemacula in the time of winters. The climate decides the length of their hibernacula. Adult try to defend a home range at the time of mating season. These lizards mate only at the time of spring, and breed in the time of second year's spring. Female group laid 3-17 eggs in the clutches of 1-3 between the months of April and July. August is the time of egg hatching. It is believed that Lyme diseases transmission gets erased because of the presence of Western Fence lizards by ticks. The regions in which lizards are found, the occurrence of Lyme diseases is lower in that area. They are a very different kind of lizards with beautiful characteristics.
